PlEIN AIR PAINTING

Painting ‘en plein air’ literally means painting alfresco or in the open air. The Impressionists advocated plein air painting to capture the effects of natural light and its popularity increased in the 1870’s when the introduction of paint in tubes made it easier. Typically, plein air painting is direct, unfussy and atmospheric. Artists tend to work on smaller scale for plein air work, quickly establishing the main shapes of the composition and trying to catch the moment before the light shifts; ‘Surfing for artists’ as one friend puts it.

For more about plein air painting see our links page.

Congratulations to Margaret Kent and Louise Treacy on their wins at The Burren Painting Centre's outdoor painting competition in July.
